Description
elmisartan is a prescription medication used to lower high blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, or kidney damage in certain high-risk patients. It works by blocking angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptors, preventing blood vessel constriction and promoting vasodilation for improved blood flow. Telmisartan is also used to help protect kidney function in people with type 2 diabetes and proteinuria.
Key facts
- Drug class: Angiotensin II Receptor Blocker (ARB)
- Mechanism: Blocks angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptors, preventing angiotensin II from narrowing blood vessels. This causes vasodilation (wider blood vessels) and lowers blood pressure.
- Other effects: Helps protect kidneys in people with type 2 diabetes and may reduce risk of heart attack or stroke in high-risk patients.
Medical uses
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Cardiovascular risk reduction in patients unable to take ACE inhibitors
- Kidney protection in diabetic patients with proteinuria
Dosage
- Typical adult starting dose: 40 mg once daily
- Range: 20–80 mg daily (can be adjusted based on patient response)
- Can be taken with or without food
Side effects
- Dizziness or lightheadedness (especially when starting)
- Fatigue
- Back pain
- Rare: high potassium levels (hyperkalemia)
- Very rare: angioedema (swelling of face/lips/throat)
